Why do Kentucky homes feel so humid?
The Lake Cumberland area sits in a humid-subtropical climate — hot, sticky summers followed by real winters. From late spring through early fall, outdoor air carries a lot of moisture, and every time a door opens, a shower runs, or someone cooks, that moisture comes indoors. When indoor humidity climbs, the air feels warmer than the thermostat reads, surfaces feel damp, and you get the exact conditions mold and dust mites love.
Humidity isn't only a comfort issue. Persistently damp air leads to musty odors, condensation on windows and vents, and indoor air quality problems over time. The goal isn't bone-dry air — it's keeping moisture in a healthy, comfortable band.
What does your AC do for humidity — and where does it fall short?
Your air conditioner removes humidity as a side effect of cooling: warm, moist air passes over the cold evaporator coil, water condenses out, and drains away. That's real dehumidification — but it only happens while the system is actively running. Two common situations leave you humid even with the AC on:
- An oversized AC short-cycles. A system that's too big cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to wring out much moisture. You get cold, clammy air — the classic sign of a unit that was never sized with a Manual J load calculation.
- Mild, muggy days. In spring and fall the temperature may not be high enough to run the AC much, yet the humidity is still high. The thermostat is satisfied, so the AC barely runs and moisture lingers.
What's the right indoor humidity level?
For most homes, aim for roughly 45–55% relative humidity indoors during cooling season. Below about 40% the air can feel dry; above 55–60% it feels sticky and invites mold and dust mites. An inexpensive hygrometer lets you see where you actually stand before spending money on a fix.
How do you lower humidity in a Kentucky home?
Most muggy-home complaints come down to a handful of fixes. Start with the basics and add equipment only if you need to:
- Right-size the AC. Correct capacity (from a Manual J calculation) lets the system run longer, steadier cycles that remove far more moisture than a short-cycling oversized unit.
- Run the fan on auto, not on. Leaving the blower on the on setting recirculates moisture that condensed on the coil back into the house before it can drain. Auto lets that water actually leave.
- Use exhaust fans. Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans during and after showers and cooking to push humid air outside at the source.
- Seal leaks. Air-seal and insulate around the attic and crawlspace, and fix duct leaks so you're not pulling humid, unconditioned air into the system.
- Add a whole-house dehumidifier. When the basics aren't enough — common in damp basements, crawlspaces, and lake-area homes — a dehumidifier integrated with your HVAC controls humidity independently of cooling. See whether you actually need one.
- Keep up with maintenance. A clean coil, a clear condensate drain, and a fresh filter all help the system dehumidify the way it should.
Common humidity mistakes
- Buying a bigger AC to cool faster. Oversizing usually makes humidity worse, not better.
- Cranking the thermostat way down. Overcooling wastes energy and can leave the house cold and clammy without fixing the moisture source.
