Why does an air conditioner freeze up?
Your AC's indoor evaporator coil gets cold to pull heat and moisture out of your home's air. As long as enough warm air keeps flowing across it, the coil stays above freezing. When that warm airflow drops — or the refrigerant charge is off — the coil's surface falls below 32°F, and the moisture condensing on it turns to ice instead of draining away. Once ice forms, it blocks airflow even more, so the problem snowballs fast: less airflow, more ice, warmer house.
7 reasons your AC is freezing up
Here are the usual causes, ordered from the easiest to check yourself to the ones that need a pro:
- Restricted airflow from a dirty filter. This is the #1 cause. A clogged filter starves the coil of warm air and lets it freeze. Replacing the filter fixes a surprising number of "frozen AC" calls.
- Closed or blocked vents and registers. Too many closed supply vents, or returns blocked by furniture or rugs, choke airflow across the coil. Open them up.
- A dirty evaporator coil. Dust and grime insulate the coil so it can't exchange heat properly, dropping its surface temperature until it ices over. This needs professional cleaning.
- A weak or failing blower. If the indoor blower motor isn't moving enough air, the coil freezes even with a clean filter. That's an electrical/mechanical repair.
- Low refrigerant from a leak. Low charge drops the coil temperature below freezing. This is not a DIY fix — it requires finding the leak and recharging by a certified technician.
- Running the AC when it's too cold outside. Cooling on a cool evening (below about 60°F) can freeze the coil even when the system is healthy. Switch to fan-only overnight.
- A thermostat or sensor problem. A miscalibrated thermostat can run the system far longer than needed, overcooling the coil until it freezes.
How to safely thaw a frozen AC
If you find ice on the coil or the refrigerant lines, work through these safe steps in order:
- Turn the cooling off. Set the thermostat to Off, or to Fan Only to thaw faster.
- Let it thaw completely. Give it one to three hours. Don't chip or scrape the ice.
- Replace the air filter if it's dirty — this clears the most common cause.
- Restore airflow: open closed supply vents and move anything blocking return grilles.
- Clear the outdoor unit of grass, leaves, and debris so it can breathe.
- Restart and watch. Once the coil is fully dry, switch back to Cool. If it freezes again, stop and call a technician.

Why a frozen coil shouldn't be ignored
Running an AC while it's frozen can let liquid refrigerant slug back into the compressor — the single most expensive component — and shorten the life of the whole system. Repeated freezing is also a clue that something underlying (a leak, a tired blower, a coil overdue for cleaning) is dragging your unit toward an early end.
