What "the right size" actually means
HVAC capacity is measured in BTU (and tons โ one ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour). The "right size" is the system that matches your home's true heating and cooling load: big enough to keep up on the hottest and coldest days, but no bigger. Getting there requires a Manual J load calculation, not a square-footage shortcut.
How a Manual J calculation works
- Measure square footage and layout โ room by room, including ceiling height.
- Assess insulation and air sealing โ how well the home holds conditioned air.
- Account for windows and doors โ number, size, type, and which way they face.
- Factor in Kentucky's climate โ using local summer and winter design temperatures.
- Add internal gains and calculate โ people, lighting, and appliances, then the precise load.
Why oversizing and undersizing both hurt
- Oversized: the system blasts to temperature and shuts off before removing humidity โ short cycling. Result: clammy rooms, higher bills, and faster wear. (See short cycling in our glossary.)
- Undersized: the system runs constantly and still can't keep up on the hottest Lake Cumberland afternoons.
- Just right: longer, gentler cycles that dehumidify properly, feel more comfortable, and use less energy.
